Cemig, the state-owned power utility of Minas Gerais, announced plans to hold auctions of new wind and solar
projects in October. The company wants to rebuild its portfolio to meet demand from unregulated contracts after
losing the concession of hydroelectric dams São Simão, Jaguara, Miranda and Volta Grande last year, which
totaled about 1,972.5 average megawatts in assured capacity. “We are buying that power [in auction] to add to our
portfolio so we can later sell it,” says Cemig’s superintendent of wholesale energy purchase and sale, who is
overseeing the auction.
